It was the effect of the opposition forces, both liberal and conservative, rather than the gracelessness and mulishness of President Wilson that led to the Senates defeat of the accord of Versailles. Wilsons strong belief that the League of Nations was a exigency went against the former Monroe Doctrine, and this made it very difficult for the Treaty of Versailles to pass. This would cash in ones chips one to believe that it was a combination of both Wilsons stubbornness and the strength of the opposing forces. Wilson comes to believe that if the treaty is not passed, the war ordain have been fought for nothing.
