The Stone of Hope

The St oneness of Hope On October 16, 2011 the Martin Luther queen Jr. memorial committal took place. The vision for the memorial was conceived in 1984 by alpha Phi Alpha the African-the Statesn fraternity which King was a member. Even though it took 27 years the 30 foot granite sculpture stands on a four acre plot by the Tidal lavabo in Washington D.C. that is now open for the public. The memorial is amid the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials with a crescent shape wall fray with 14 excerpts of Kings sermons and speeches. The sculpture consist of three pieces do from granite blocks devil that forms the Mountain of Despair the third is the centerpiece The Stone of Hope. It is made with about 34 granite blocks that a crane hoist and positioned the blocks one layer at a time. The heaviest block of granite weighs 55 piles more than a Metrorail car. The sculpture sets on a 2 1/2 foot concrete slab that has 15 performed structural piles up to 50 feet long driven in the ground and stands on rock. There are 182 cherry apex trees that will bloom each April representing the month King died. The citation 1964 Independence Avenue refers to the 1964 Voting Rights Act.

Based on the I Have a Dream speech out of a mountain of despair, a rock candy of hope was the concept for the devil sides and the center to show King emerging from a stone of hope.
