Whether you love them or hate them, skate controversys have been around for decades. In the beginning the competitions werent always head attended, heavily televised or had such high prize purses as their more modern day counterparts. They were, however, an integral part of the skateboard culture. Lets take a brief look back at how it all began.
It is generally accepted that the first sponsored skateboard competition was held in Hermosa Beach, California, at the Pier Avenue Junior highschool School in 1963. By todays standards a paltry coke people showed up to witness the event. The competition was sponsored by Mahaka, who was likewise responsible for creating the first skateboarding exhibition team. That initial competition spurred other surf and skate shops like Hobie to host competitions of their own. The take of these initial sponsored competitions was similar to those of sponsored competitions today: to draw attention to two the business and the sport itself.
By 1964 the idea of competitive skateboarding had caught on to the point that the first, unsanctioned, International Skateboarding Competition was born.



Held at La Palma Stadium in Anaheim, California, it was broadcast on alphabet Wide World of Sports and featured performances of such legendary skateboarders as Danny Fremont Bearer III, Torger Johnson, Danny Escalante, Bob Mohr, Patti McGee, Wendy Bearer, Skip Frey, Bruce Logan, Laurie Turner and Coleen Boyd. In resume the championship was said to have attracted over 280 skateboarders all with the ambitiousness of taking home a title. Admission to the event was $5 per person and it was an absolute sell-out.
Danny Bearer, who was sponsored by Hobie, won three events at that first national championship. Among them were the Freestyle, Flatland Slalom and the Down Slalom.
