Response to Act One of King Lear Act One, son of a bitch One of King Lear opens with Kent, Gloucester and Gloucester’s son, Edmund. Gloucester introduced Edmund to Kent as his “whoreson” (I.i.24) or bastard child. King Lear and hence enters with his three daughters and the two first’s husbands. Lear asks his daughters to discover him which of them loves him most. Both G peerlessril and Regan flatter him but his youngest and prospered daughter, Cordelia, is honest and tells Lear “Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave / My shade into my m turn outh. I love your Majesty / concord to my bond, no to a greater extent nor less.” (I.i.100-102). Enraged by this because of his screenlandness to the truth, Lear cuts Cordelia out of her inheritance.
