In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States was becoming increasingly divided everyplace the issue of slavery. The northern landed estates opposed slavery and the southern states depended on slavery. As new states were being added, disagreement arose over whether the states should be admitted as slave states or relinquish states. This disagreement resulted in the Compromise of 1850. This compromise admitted California as a non-slave state and ended slave trading in the capital. The southern states were appeased by slavery being allowed in the capital, unrestricted slave vocation between slave states, and a stronger Fugitive Slave Act. Unfortunately, the resulting love-in-idleness did not last long because the two-party Whig and Democrat outline began to fail and was replaced by a North versus the South melodic theme set. Over the next ten years, the North and the South would wax further and further apart as the country pose towards the Civil War.

Anthony burns was a slave who had run away from his owner in Virginia to Boston, Massachusetts. Anthonys owner came to Boston to repossess his property based upon the Fugitive Slave Act. Northerners came to Anthonys abnegation and prolonged the case. The judge obstinate in the owners favor to the freshness of many Northerners. In their opinion, the decision gave the Southern states too lots power over them.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 also added to the tensions between anti-slavery and pro-slavery activists.
