An introduction to Petrarch Francesco Petrarca, known in English as Petrarch, was an Italian scholar, poet and one of the earliest Renaissance humanists. He is often called the arrest of Humanism. Petrarch was born in Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy, on July 20, 1304. In 1312 his family go to Avignon, France. Four years later, Petrarchs father sent him to think over law in Montpellier, France, and he was not able to annul the subject until his father died in 1326. He returned to Italy to continue his statutory studies at Bologna in 1320 but was already enough fascinated with literature. Petrarchs earliest surviving poems, on the termination of his mother, date from this period. Once free of law he prosecute (??) the study of classical literature and his relentless (???) search for antiquated multiple sclerosiss. One of his significant discoveries, at Verona in 1345, was a gathering of the letters of the Roman orator (???) Cicero. The most celebrated of Petrarchs writings are the lyrics collectively called the Canzoniere (Songbook), which advanced the growth of Italian as a literary language and popularized the form of the sonnet that is called the Petrarchan sonnet. But Petrarch wrote primarily in Latin, which he hoped to restore (??) to classical purity. On April 6, 1341, he was appointed poet laureate (????) in Rome for his Latin epical Africa. Many historians regard the date as the true line of descent of the Renaissance. Among his other Latin works were books of history, biography, and moral philosophy; a dialogue with Saint Augustine; and volumes of letters. In 1353 Petrarch went to live in Italy permanently.
