When the friend first comes upon the house he notices the bleak walls (113) along with the the white trunks of decayed trees (113) and minute fungi (115) that covers the exterior. after observing the houses deteriorating state, he decides to continue on inside to meet with his old friend. He finds Roderick inside of the study, and notices his so terribly altered (117) appearance since the last time they maxim each other.
The narrator also describes Roderick Ushers tinct as cadaverousness (117). Poe uses vivid imagery to describe the decaying of both the house and Rodericks physical appearance. Yet, the exterior is not the only picture of both that is degenerating. The interior of the house is as dark and horrible as the outside, along with Rodericks deteriorating mental state repayable in part to MS. The house is a direct aspect of Roderick Usher himself. He has been confined in the house for so many years that he has literally taken on the house as another part of himself.
