At a time when womens role in America was growing larger than ever before, Toni Frissel was also gaolbreak ground, as one of the prototypic female photographers at expressive style and as a photojournalist during World War II. Antoinette (Toni) Frissell was born in 1907 to Lewis Fox Frissell and Antoinette timber Montgomery in modern York City. The daughter of a New York physician, she had a privileged childhood. Through family connections Frissel began her career at dash as a caption writer but was soon pushed towards photography by the editor. [GlamourSplash 3/30/2009]  From 1931 to 1942, her work appeared on a regular basis in the magazine.  In 1941, she decided to visit the war precedent as a freelance photographer for the American florid Cross and later as the official photographer of the Womens Army Corps.  Her work regularly appeared in Harpers Bazaar and Sports Illustrated where she was the first female staff photographer. Throughout the late 40s several books illustrated by her photographs were also published.

Throughout Tonis career in fashion photography, she was know for some of her groundbreaking ideas.  For example, while most photographers unplowed women in fixed indoor scenes, she took her subjects out of the studio and into the alfresco to commence a sense of motion and freedom to the new active woman.  Her unconventional scenes were known for their creative use of angles to bring more depth to her subjects. Separate from fashion, she is also remembered for some of her photo-portraits of the famed from America and Europe, including Presidents and Prime Ministers.
